penny pinching

I might have some major expenses coming up, so I decided I need to start saving money, since my savings at this point can, and do, fit under the cushions of the couch. I was brainstorming today on ways to cut expenses, starting at lunch. Almost every day I eat lunch in the cafeteria. The easiest way to save money might be to bring lunch, but that doesn't sound very appetizing. Anyway, I thought I would share what I came up with so that you can save too.

  • Instead of getting the Special Burger from the grill guy, just get one of the premade burgers under the heat lamps. Then smile at the deli woman so she'll give you a slice of lettuce and tomato so you don't have to pay for one from the salad bar.
  • When filling up at the salad bar, get light things. Cauliflower is heavier than broccoli. Also, fill up one of those little cups with dressing instead of putting it on your salad; most times the woman at the register won't make you weigh the dressing.
  • Skip the soda, it's just empty calories. Fill up a cup with water, it's free. Then once you pay for your lunch you can use packets of sugar in the water. Plus don't forget the other free condiments that could flavor your drink, salt, tobasco, pickle relish, be creative.
  • Hide behind the soda machine and eat your lunch there. “Just browsing, thanks.”
  • Get lunch from the vending machine. Rip off the door with a pry bar to get at the doritos and snickers. Don't forget to stock up on gum.
  • Bring a severed finger in with you. Use your imagination.
  • “Say hello to my little friend.”
