thanks
I'm 35 years old, and tomorrow will be the first time I really have to cook for Thanksgiving. I think there's only been one year since we got married that we had dinner at home, but it was just the two of us, and so there wasn't really much stress. My wife, not having grown up in this country, had low expectations, so anything marginally better than hamburger helper impressed her (coming from me.)
Tomorrow we're having a friend of hers from work, along with the friend's husband and mother. The husband is also from some far-away land with funny accents, and I don't think he's a big fan of American food in general. I'm not going to try to impress him. But I am a bit worried about the friend and her mother, who have a lifetime of family Thanksgivings behind them, and there is no reason to think that they will not go home counting my efforts as the Worst Thanksgiving Dinner of All Time. I gather the mother doesn't cook much. We did go over to her house for dinner once, and all of the food was either straight from the store or brought over by other family members. So I keep telling myself that they won't be too disappointed. But I don't have much hope.
Menu: Two turkey breasts, roasted according to some lady on Food Network. Apple stuffing. Mom's green bean casserole (the standard mushroom soup and fried onions variety. My favorite.) Garlic mashed potatoes. Friend is bringing some sweet potato dish and “a pie.” It had better be a pumpkin pie, that's all I have to say. And they had better not be expecting any for themselves. Hmmm… looking at that list, maybe I should add something else. Maybe I'll pick up some stuffed mushrooms at the store.
Happy Thanksgiving Americans, and I hope the rest of you enjoy your silly little traditions too.
